Four Things Great Bosses Never Say
“Do as I say, not as I do.” To be an effective leader, you need to be respected. However, it’s difficult for employees to respect someone who is not playing by the same rules as them. Being a boss shouldn’t be about power or privilege. Lead by example.
“Work smarter, not harder.” While your intentions may be good this phrase can come across as demeaning to your hardworking subordinates. Are you saying they’re working stupidly or that they’re taking too long to accomplish a task?
”Bring me solutions, not problems.” There are two problems with this phrase: a) leaders are supposed to support their staff and help find solutions to their problems, and b) don’t shoot the messenger. Your employees should be encouraged to come to their boss for help.
“There’s no ‘I’ in ‘team’.” Teams are made up of individuals, and each individual should be recognized and respected. Repressing individuality can diminish employees morale.
